[08/17] First-hour buying absorbed, then value migrates below Friday's shelf · ES Futures Session Recap
Trade held beneath 7803.00 all session and value settled lower, with the close under today's own value low.
The open printed right on Friday's POC at 7803.00, and the auction spent about a minute above it. The high of 7809.50 came at 08:31 and stood for the rest of the day. From there price rotated lower in steps, cut through Friday's low, and settled at 7771.25 on more than 660,000 contracts. Today's value overlapped Friday's and shifted down. What stayed unfinished sits overhead: Friday's VAH at 7813.50 and the 7830.75 high were never touched, and the close beneath today's own value low leaves the lower distribution unconfirmed.
The session
Value came in overlapping lower, today's band sliding under Friday's on a shared middle. The actual battle was one price: 7803.00, Friday's POC and the shelf the morning tape had been building on. Trade held beneath it for effectively the entire session, which is acceptance, meaning time spent trading beyond a level rather than a touch and a rejection. Friday's VAL at 7796.75 went the same way roughly half an hour later and never traded back. The low at 14:32 came late and close to the bell, so the session ended with the auction still probing rather than repairing. VWAP at 7788.24 sat well above the close, which is where a session that trended one way from the first half hour tends to leave it.
The first hour is the interesting part. Buyers were net aggressive into 09:30 while price was already off 7809.50, and none of that pressing produced a higher high. That is absorption, and it resolved against the buyers. Delta crossed to negative by 11:30 and stayed there, and the close at -4515 is the day's lowest reading, made in the final hour. Sellers were the initiative side from midday on, and they were still adding into the settlement.
How this morning's read did
The morning letter's own falsifier was met. It said acceptance below 7796.75, half an hour or more beneath Friday's VAL without recovery, breaks the rotation and opens 7784.75. The auction spent 340 minutes below that level with no recovery, and 7784.75 came and went on the way to 7767.75. The lean, rotation inside Friday's value with 7803.00 as the magnet, was wrong in direction from the first hour.
The letter did describe this branch: time below the shelf without a reclaim says the absorption failed and the auction is looking for the old balance. That is the branch that ran, and the early tell it named, the response at the shelf in the first hour, was the honest place to have read it. The upside condition never came into play. Acceptance above 7824.50 was never threatened, and 7813.50 was not even touched.
